PTA
VIMS is fortunate to have a very active PTA. At our school, all families and teachers are considered members. We encourage everyone to take part in our various activities, including volunteering with the planning and execution of events. We are able to host so many successful events only through the generous donation of many parents’ time and talent.

PTA Activities
General Meetings
Four general meetings are held each school year - September, November, February and May. We encourage all parents to attend to stay informed of current events. Childcare is provided for children two years and older by Middle School students at a modest fee. Advance reservation for childcare is requested.
Beach Picnics
We hold a family beach picnic at beautiful Magen’s Bay Beach on a Sunday afternoon at the start and end every school year. PTA grills hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers as well as provides water and lemonade. Each family is encouraged to bring a side dish. Many look forward to the wide variety of delicious appetizers, salads, casseroles, and of course deserts.
The Beach Picnics are a great opportunity to meet and get to know other Montessori families on a fun and relaxing Sunday afternoon.
Black History Month
Every February, our PTA assists with a variety of school activities centered around this theme.
Carnival
Our school has had many winning entries in the annual Carnival Children’s Parade. This is an effort that the whole school is involved in. From choosing the theme and concept, designing and making the costumes and props to choreographing and practicing the routines with the students. Every year beginning in March, it takes everyone’s involvement – students, parents and faculty. PTA’s sponsorship allows students from the elementary level and up to participate at no charge. PTA provides the funds and volunteer assistance; allowing us to create awesome costumes and outstanding props every year.
Coffee Hour
Coffee Hour is an informal get-together hosted by the PTA Board. Many parents find this is an excellent opportunity to stay in touch with current events and issues at our school. Notes from each Coffee Hour are given to the school administrator to ensure all voices are heard. Please check your PTA calendar for Coffee Hour times.
Fundraising Programs
We are always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to raise money to fund our activities and annual donation to the school. Some of the school-wide events that we sponsor include the Staff Appreciation Thanksgiving Luncheon, Beach Picnics, and Carnival troop. Two current fundraisers are Box Tops for Cash and Magazine Subscription Sale.
We also give approximately $10,000 at the end of the school year to fund a particular school project that is selected by our members.
Halloween Party
This annual event has become widely known as the best children’s costume party on St. Thomas. The entire playground is transformed into a giant Halloween party complete with games, potluck supper and music. It is usually held on the last Saturday in October with the general public invited to attend.
Music Fest
Our first Music Fest was held in observance of our 40th anniversary. It was so enjoyable that everyone agreed that it needed to become an annual PTA event.
Music Fest is in late September or early October of each school year. Held on our grassy soccer field, this afternoon-to-evening event features a variety of continuous live music, allowing attendees to hear their favorite type of music, from Bluegrass and Blues to Country Western and more. Various classrooms have food booths as a class fundraising project. The PTA sells glow-light toys and beverages. (Weather permitting we’ll offer “Moon Bouncing”.)
New Parent’s Welcome
Every year PTA sponsors an evening for the parents of new students to help them become better acquainted with the school campus and various policies and procedures. A light dinner is offered. This is an excellent opportunity for new parents to meet others and ask any questions they may have. Childcare is provided for children two years and older by Middle School students at a modest fee. Advance reservation for childcare is requested.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Our PTA annually thanks our staff for their contributions through a luncheon served on the last day of school before the Thanksgiving break. The lunch is prepared and served by parents in the Music Room, which is transformed into a lovely café complete with flowers, candles and real (breakable) plates and glasses. During the lunch, parents supervise the classrooms to allow staff the time to enjoy their feast. Many volunteers are needed for this much appreciated event.
Wheel Day
Once a year on a nice Saturday in spring, we invite all students to bring their “wheels” to school. Younger students may ride, skate, scoot or whatever else that has wheels on the Main Playground while the Parking Lot is closed off for older students to enjoy their “wheels”. This is a great opportunity for children to ride their bikes, skates, scooters or whatever in a safe setting. There is a small admission charge, and PTA sells refreshments. Volunteers are needed in many capacities. (Children are required to wear bike helmets and recommended to wear kneepads.)
Spring Fair
This is a new event, complete with an arcade and great food for a relaxing afternoon of family fun. The public is invited to attend. Please check the school calendar for the date.
