Lower School
Lower School is made up of two levels.
VIMS Primary is for three to six year olds. In the multi-aged setting, the children learn from each other. Younger children get a chance to look ahead and see what is coming next by watching the older children. Older children have the opportunity to reinforce their knowledge by sharing it with the younger children. The children take responsibility for themselves and for each other. The classroom becomes a thriving community where children are treated with respect and dignity and want to treat others in the same way. At this time, we have three Primary classrooms and due to interest in our program, we have plans for adding a fourth class in the near future.
VIMS Elementary is for 6-12 year old students. Like Montessori Primary, Montessori Elementary is based on three-year age groups, 6-9 and 9-12 year old students. At both of these elementary levels, the multi-age grouping provides for broad social development. In an exciting research style of learning, elementary children work in small groups on a variety of projects, which spark the imagination and engage the intellect. The appetite of children at this age, to understand the universe and their place in it, directs the elementary work toward all aspects of the universe and beyond. We have two Lower Elementary classes (6-9 year olds) and one Upper Elementary class (9-12 year olds).
